Habib Beye has received formal written confirmation of his Stade Rennais dismissal one week on, making the decision official, RMC Sport reports.

Now free to join another club, he is being lined up for a return to Olympique de Marseille, where he played between 2003 and 2007.

The prospect comes amid Mehdi Benatia’s growing influence at OM, recently confirmed by owner Frank McCourt, who is seen as an admirer of the former defender.

Beye, expected to succeed Roberto De Zerbi, would be tasked with delivering a podium finish in the top flight and a tilt at the Coupe de France.

OM are fourth in the league, five points behind Olympique Lyonnais, whom they host at the Stade Vélodrome in less than two weeks.

A home win over Toulouse on fourth March would put them into the semi-finals of France’s oldest competition and keep alive hopes of a first trophy since 2012.
