Hainer does not rule out Nagelsmann’s return to FC Bayern

In Vincent Kompany, FC Bayern has apparently found the ideal coach in the summer of 2024. The Belgian is leading the record champions confidently through the Bundesliga and Champions League, inspires with his playing philosophy and is held in the highest esteem both internally and externally.

Despite the success under Kompany, Bayern President Herbert Hainer has now surprisingly commented on the possible return of Julian Nagelsmann – the coach who was sacked in spring 2023.

Hainer: „Perhaps he will return at some point“

In an interview with the Abendzeitung München newspaper, Hainer looked back on the difficult search for a coach following the departure of Thomas Tuchel. At the time, Nagelsmann’s return was also an issue – but Bayern decided against it. „It would have been far too early to bring him back,“ explained Hainer in retrospect.

Although the president sees Nagelsmann as a great coaching talent, he believes that he still lacks experience: „Julian Nagelsmann will certainly become a very good coach one day, but he also needs his experience, he is still very, very young. And he is now doing that with the German national team.“

However, Hainer did not want to completely rule out a second term of office for the 38-year-old in Munich: „Perhaps he will return to FC Bayern at some point.“

Kompany convinces all along the line

However, such a thought seems purely hypothetical at the moment. Things are going almost perfectly for the German record champions under Vincent Kompany. Bayern have had a firm grip on all competitions since he took office – and the 39-year-old stands for a clear plan, modern approaches and strong team leadership.

Hainer goes into raptures: „Vincent Kompany is a stroke of luck. He never puts himself first, but always the team. The players pay him back.“

The positive mood surrounding the Belgian was recently underpinned by the extension of his contract until 2029. The club wants to shape a new era with Kompany in the long term – and so a return of Nagelsmann seems a long way off, at least for the time being.
