FC Bayern’s defensive play has visibly stabilized. One of the key beneficiaries is now speaking openly about his coach and is not sparing with words of praise.

In an interview with L’Équipe, Dayot Upamecano particularly highlights the meticulous work of Vincent Kompany: „He really helped me with my positioning – posture, when and how to tackle long balls. We got going from day one.“ Video analysis also plays a key role: „Some sessions last 30 to 40 minutes. We’ve become a team, a force.“

Before the 2:1 win against Paris, in which Upamecano put in a strong performance, Kompany had a clear message: „The coach insisted that we not be afraid and attack them. Before the game, he even told me: ‚If necessary, you will press the goalkeeper‘.“

The fact that Upamecano is flourishing under the Belgian is also down to his style of play. He deliberately seeks out risk: „I like to initiate things with the ball, to break through lines. There’s a risk involved, but I’ve always liked taking risks.“

Upamecano on Olise: „When he starts to tremble“

The 27-year-old seems more present, more aggressive – and enjoys exactly that: „I love defending. That’s what I love: duels. I would never refuse a duel.“ Even in training, he goes all in: „Olise says: ‚Out of ten duels, I win ten!‘ – But when I get serious and use my body, he starts shaking (laughs).“

He also sees advantages in his day-to-day work with Kompany compared to previous stations: „With Kompany, you can tell that he played in my position himself. Sometimes he calls me: ‚Dayot, come into my office‘ – and shows me videos with points that I should improve.“

Despite the centre-back’s positive words, his future in Munich remains uncertain. His contract expires in the summer, talks with the club are ongoing, but no agreement has yet been reached. The Frenchman said of his future: „I’m concentrating on this season and my goals with the club and the national team. I don’t have a head for it.“ He continued: „I’m completely relaxed. I’m under contract with FC Bayern. I have goals. I’m very grateful when clubs are interested in me.“

The fact that he plays a leading role under Kompany could ultimately be a decisive argument for him to stay.
