Hakim Arezki is targeting a third European title with France and has been ever present across three games en route to Friday’s Euro semi-final against Italy at 21:00. According to L'Équipe, the 43-year-old has underpinned a tight campaign.
On Tuesday he slipped a pass for Babacar Niang to create France's second in a 3-0 win over Greece. Yet his defensive level has defined the tournament so far, with France conceding only one goal and him the only player to have played every minute.
Goalkeeper Alessandro Bartolomucci says he has delivered three outstanding displays and has been vital in keeping goals against to a minimum. First capped in 2009, Arezki has lived France’s extremes, from a winless Tokyo low to the gold of Paris.
His preparation for a fifth Euro has been exacting, with Bondy Cécifoot Club coach Samir Gassama depicting a relentless trainer. On Strasbourg’s synthetic turf, his one v one dominance, anticipation and ability to smother attackers have repeatedly tilted duels France’s way.
Formerly a number six in sighted football, he lost his vision in 2001 after a bullet struck his head during a peaceful march in Algeria. He says experience has refined his timing, reduced fouls and helped him shut down shots and final actions.
Communication with the goalkeeper is pivotal. Jonathan Grangier and Bartolomucci share duties, feeding him extra cues such as a runner behind without guiding his play. Their connection kicks in early during transitions, with the keeper’s call taking precedence on fast, central long balls.
