Former Premier League forward Hal Robson-Kanu has hailed Luke O'Nien after the Sunderland defender helped the club clinch a Europa League spot.
Robson-Kanu said in a LinkedIn post that O'Nien's journey reflects resilience and perseverance in the face of setbacks.
O'Nien joined from Wycombe Wanderers in 2018 when Sunderland were in League One, and has been central to their ascent back to the Premier League.
Signed as a midfielder, he has also operated at full-back and centre-back, with his adaptability and leadership prized in the dressing room.
His route was unconventional, having been released by Watford and dropping into non-league before rebuilding his career on Wearside. He then fought for his future after a difficult debut against Charlton Athletic.
Robson-Kanu also noted how O'Nien and his family chased opportunities, including his father emailing every EFL club for a chance.
Now 31, O'Nien is a popular figure among Sunderland supporters, frequently praised for his mentality and commitment.
