Halifax is to honour former England striker Frank Worthington with a blue plaque.

According to BBC UK, a Halifax Civic Trust campaign to fund the plaque quickly met its initial £650 target.

Worthington won eight England caps and scored twice. He began at Huddersfield Town, then played for Leicester City, Bolton, Birmingham City, Southampton and Leeds United in a 25-year career that spanned more than 20 clubs. He died in March 2021, aged 72, after living with dementia for several years.

John Peters of the trust said the plaque would give the community a way to remember him and noted he is believed to be Halifax's only capped England player. He recalled Worthington's brief spell at Leeds and described him as flamboyant, entertaining and widely liked.

The appeal was organised by the trust with Worthington's family. The donation page remains open, with further contributions directed to the Alzheimer's Society's Sport United Against Dementia fund, which supports people across football in the UK affected by the disease.

Peters said the response in Halifax town centre had been overwhelming and that many recalled watching or socialising with Worthington. He added that the family miss him and see the tribute as a chance to spark happier memories.

The trust hope to unveil the plaque later this year. They intend to mount it on the family home in Shelf, the village where Worthington was born in 1948.
