Sunderland goalkeeper Adam Richardson could leave this summer on a free as his contract nears expiry.

According to Sunderland Echo, National League side FC Halifax Town want to sign the 21-year-old once his deal ends, and he has been training with the Shaymen in recent weeks as they weigh a move for next season.

Richardson joined Sunderland aged eight and progressed through the academy, regularly training with the first team and featuring in several pre-season squads. He was on the bench for a Papa John’s Trophy tie at Fleetwood Town in 2020 when he was 17.

The 6ft 6in keeper earned England call-ups up to Under-18 level. Injuries have checked his progress and competition for academy places has intensified.

Joe Cowan, Isaac Allan, Dan Cameron and Ben Metcalf have all emerged in the goalkeeping group, pushing him down the order.

Richardson gained senior experience during 2024-25 with spells at Hebburn Town and Blyth Spartans, and he had a trial at Hartlepool United last summer. He has also featured for Sunderland’s Under-21s this season, and with his contract close to ending, a departure now appears increasingly likely.
