Transfermarkt confirms a report originating in Britain’s Mirror tabloid concerning Hamburg’s interest in Arsenal midfielder Albert Sambi Lokonga. The newly promoted Bundesliga outfit needs to augment its imbalanced squad on both sides of the ball in order to turn around what has been a disappointing start to the current German top flight campaign. Hamburg barely escaped first round elimination in the cup and have not scored a goal through two league matchdays.
Hamburg are known to be targeting at least one more attacking addition. Sambi Lokonga’s ability to work as an anchoring defensive midfielder or conservative sweeper could serve as an immense help to head coach Merlin Polzin’s shaky defensive corps. Sambi Lokonga – who has seen his estimated market value fall steady since joining Arsenal – has already been loaned out thrice by the Gunners.
Hamburg have secured one major loan signing from the Isle already this weekend, welcoming Tottenham defender Luka Vuskovic to the Hanseatic city state on Friday. Signing Lokonga on loan nevertheless isn’t an option, however, as the twice-capped Belgian international enters the final year of his contract with the North Londoners. The 25-year-old currently maintains an estimated €8m market value.
