Hamburg’s Merlin Polzin accepts responsibility for personnel decisions after heavy Mainz defeat | OneFootball

Hamburger SV head coach Merlin Polzin offered no excuses after his heavily rebuilt side suffered a horrendous 0-5 home defeat to Mainz 05 on Sunday afternoon.

Hamburg entered their first home Bundesliga fixture of the season looking to respond to their 2-0 opening-day defeat away at Borussia Dortmund. Instead, the afternoon developed into one of the club’s worst top-flight home performances in decades.

Sunday’s defeat also leaves Polzin’s side without either a point or a goal after two league fixtures.

“The result speaks for itself,” Polzin remarked in his opening press-conference statement. “It was a totally shitty afternoon for us. It was a thoroughly deserved loss. There’s no need to sugarcoat anything or attempt to explain anything so soon after the game when the emotions are still running high.”

The scale of the defeat proved particularly striking given how aggressively Hamburg strengthened their squad during the closing stages of the summer transfer window. The club entered the season with several unresolved personnel questions, many of which were examined in GGFN’s 2026/27 tactical preview of Hamburg.

HSV subsequently addressed several of those issues in spectacular fashion.

Fabio Vieira returned permanently from Arsenal, Zakaria El Ouahdi arrived to strengthen the right flank and David Møller Wolfe completed another major deadline-day addition.

Sunday nevertheless offered a brutal reminder that acquiring quality and integrating it are two very different tasks.

Polzin accepts responsibility for new-look Hamburg XI

Polzin made four changes to the team that started in Dortmund, with El Ouahdi, Bilal Nadir, Møller Wolfe and Terem Moffi all entering the XI. Asked whether introducing so many new players at once contributed to the collapse, the 35-year-old did not dismiss the question. Nadir had to deputize for Lokonga, who was ruled out with back problems on short notice, but it was Polzin’s decision to replace Louis Lemke and Bakery Jatta in the wingback slots, not to mention give Moffi the nod ahead of Patson Daka at the top of the attack.

“Of course you should ask about that,” Polzin responded. “That’s what you’re there for. We were convinced prior to the game based on the training week and the decisions we made. All the lads were committed. They shoulder their share of the responsibility and so do I. We’ll need time to get into the swing of things after all these changes. But there are still plenty of things that you can do on the pitch to prevent a result like this.”

Hamburg fail to execute match plan

The defeat was not simply a matter of new players misunderstanding one another. Polzin stressed that Hamburg had prepared specifically for the qualities that ultimately decided the match. Mainz dominated the opening stages before Kaishu Sano intercepted an errant Nicolai Remberg pass and immediately released Sheraldo Becker for the 19th-minute opener. Becker then created Phillipp Mwene’s second shortly before halftime.

“We were aware of Mainz’s compact nature before the game and knew the things we needed to do to prevent, for example, the counter that led to the 1-0,” Polzin explained. “We simply weren’t able to get into our rhythm. We addressed at halftime that we couldn’t create marking problems for the opponent. We didn’t manage to attack the deep. There were a bunch of things that meshed together today and led to what happened.”

Polzin responded by introducing Vieira, Patson Daka and Shafiq Nandja at the break.

This time, even Vieira could not alter the trajectory.

Less than three minutes after the restart, Becker crossed for Phillip Tietz to make it 3-0.

Polzin confirms Torunarigha substitution was a sporting decision

Jordan Torunarigha was another player removed at halftime. Polzin confirmed afterward that there was no injury behind the center-back’s substitution.

“It was a sporting decision,” the HSV trainer said. “We accomplished very little of what we set out to do. But it’s not about singling out individuals. We go through these things together.”

Hamburg never recovered. Tietz added his second goal in the 83rd minute before former HSV attacker Ransford Königsdörffer completed the rout in stoppage time. Königsdörffer’s subsequent celebration in front of the home support produced another unwanted subplot, with HSV captain Remberg criticizing his former teammate afterward.

For Polzin, however, the larger problems were obvious enough.

“With all due respect to the quality of Mainz and the good game they played, that’ll be the main focus of the analysis,” he said. “Playing like this, no opponent in the Bundesliga will have problems beating us.”

“This is a moment of extreme hurt,” Polzin went on to say at the conclusion of the press conference. “It wasn’t expected and I’m being completely honest about our performance and also the quality that we have. Today, we received a dose of reality and a reminder of what’s important. Namely, to remain level-headed and do the simple things well first.”
