Hansi Flick sends clear message after Barcelona victory over Basel – “We need something more”

On Sunday, Barcelona secured an impressive 5-2 victory over FC Basel in their penultimate pre-season friendly. Karim Adeyemi, Hamza Abdelkarim, Lamine Yamal and Jesse Bisiwu (x2) got the goals for the Catalan side, who face Al Ahly in the Joan Gamper Trophy on Wednesday before their opening match of the La Liga campaign against Elche next weekend.

As per MD, head coach Hansi Flick gave his reaction to the victory in Switzerland. While he was impressed, he admitted that his side “needs more” – which they are about to get with the impending signings of Rodri and Joao Cancelo.

“It has been a good test for us, we are already thinking about the debut against Elche. I think we need something more. We will analyse this match and also the training sessions. And this week we have a game, we’ll see. The most important thing is how we train, the quality, the intensity, and it is very good. I see the level of the team and that’s the most important thing.

“It was a good test for us, Basel did well. It wasn’t easy to play against them. Maybe in the first half we didn’t play as fast as we wanted, neither in positioning nor without the ball. That is what we have to do better. We have potential, and I’m happy with the test. The most important thing is how we train. We have to work hard to maintain the level of last season.”

Flick gives insight on managing players’ minutes

Flick was without a couple of players, including Pedri and Gavi, for the match as he sought to ease them in easily after their late return following the 2026 World Cup. He spoke on how challenging it has been to manage things during pre-season.

“It is not an easy management, there are many players who have joined recently. Some players arrived five days ago and we have to prepare for the match against Elche: we have to think about who can start, who can play ninety minutes, you can only make five changes… All of this influences how we wanted to manage this match.”
