Barcelona begin their Copa del Rey campaign tonight with an away trip to face CD Guadalajara, and there will be no sense of complacency within the travelling camp.
According to a report from SPORT, Hansi Flick has delivered a firm and unmistakable message to his players ahead of the tie that this competition matters, and there will be no shortcuts.
The head coach has made his intentions clear through his actions. Barcelona are travelling with all available first-team players.
Even Joan Garcia has been included in the squad, despite not being expected to feature.
For Flick, there are no concessions when it comes to official competitions, regardless of the opponent or the stage of the tournament.
Perhaps the strongest signal of all is Flick’s handling of Robert Lewandowski. The Polish striker had been carrying some physical discomfort, which kept him out of the recent league fixture against Osasuna.
Even so, Flick has opted not to rest him completely, reinforcing the idea that the Copa del Rey is a clear objective for Barcelona this season.

There is a strong awareness within the coaching staff that cup competitions can be unforgiving.
Facing a Primera Federacion side does not change that reality. The message to the dressing room is simple – respect the opponent, respect the competition.
That said, the starting XI is expected to reflect a balance. Flick is likely to mix established starters with players who have seen fewer minutes so far this season, as well as selected academy prospects.
This could open the door for Tommy Marques, who is pushing hard and may be handed his first-team debut.
Similarly, the match presents an important opportunity for Marc Bernal to continue rebuilding his match sharpness and rhythm.
Even with these potential changes, the game will not be treated as a laboratory experiment, as Flick’s demands remain constant.
