One aspect of their game in which FC Barcelona have shown a marked decline in comparison to the last season is the defense. The Catalan team is now conceding significantly more goals than it did during Hansi Flick’s first season in-charge.

Apparently, the German coach is wary of this decline in the defensive capabilities of his team, and according to Mundo Deportivo, he is working to make improvements in this regard by working in conjunction with one of his assistants, Heiko Westermann.

For this purpose, the coaching staff is taking advantage of the giant screens installed at the Tito Vilanova training ground, on which videos are shown to players to correct their mistakes.

One of the main problems the coaches have identified in this regard is the lack of intensity in pressure, which was clear in the last El Clasico when Jude Bellingham was allowed a lot of time to assist Kylian Mbappe’s goal.

Similarly, Frenkie de Jong’s lapse in concentration in the game against Celta Vigo also allowed Borja Iglesias to beat the offside trap and score.

In addition to the first team, Hansi Flick’s staff is also in communication with the reserve team to ensure his defensive methods are being taught to the youngsters. Similarly, Flick is also focusing on the goalkeepers’ training, handled mainly by ‘Dela’, to ensure the goalies also play their part in defense.

Hopefully, these interventions will help Barcelona overcome their defensive problems, which can prove crucial as the season gets nearer to its second half.
