Nottingham Forest looked set to land Everton teenager Harrison Armstrong for a reported £40 million, only for a late U-turn to scupper the transfer.

According to Nottingham Post, the proposal had reached an advanced stage, with the 19-year-old granted permission for a medical and to discuss personal terms. The England Under-19 international has already made 18 Premier League appearances.

Once the chase became public, Everton supporters made their stance clear. During last Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Bournemouth, his name was chanted and travelling fans warned of a “riot” if he was sold.

The move was subsequently shelved, leaving Forest to ponder what might have been.

In 2024 they signed Elliot Anderson from Newcastle United for £35 million, then sold him this summer to Manchester City for £116 million. A similar profit might eventually have followed with Armstrong.

Forest had targeted midfield reinforcements through the summer, even after Xaver Schlager arrived. Oliver Glasner still has Ibrahim Sangare, James McAtee, Nicolas Dominguez and Ryan Yates, yet another teenage talent could have joined that group.
