Harrison Jones has thanked Sunderland after sealing a three-year move to Peterborough United, ending a 15-year association with the club. The 21-year-old midfielder completed the switch.
He joined Sunderland aged six and made seven senior appearances in all competitions. Sunderland Echo understands that he has joined Posh on a free transfer, with a sell-on clause included. He posted a farewell on Instagram to acknowledge the club’s role in his development.
Jones said he was delighted to join Peterborough, called them a big club, and looked forward to meeting everyone. He thanked Sunderland for shaping him as a player and person, and wished the team well.
Team-mates responded with good-luck messages, including Luke O’Nien, Chris Rigg and Trai Hume. Dan Neil reacted with a heart emoji.
The move offers the chance of regular football after a season split between Sunderland’s first team and under-21s. He was named on the bench for several Premier League games in 2026, including against Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa. He said the decision came quickly, was difficult after so long, but it felt the right time to play, describing himself as a versatile midfielder keen to be in before pre-season.
His exit comes amid a wider reshaping of Sunderland’s academy under Florent Ghisolfi. The club have secured options on prospects such as Zak Johnson and Timur Tutierov, appointed John Hewitson as academy manager, and Graeme Murty is set to leave his role with the under-21s. Sunderland aim to refresh the pathway and protect academy value.
