The player said in a post that he thanked everyone at Rotherham United and wished them well for the future.

The 17-year-old joined the Millers in January to gain senior EFL minutes as Leeds battled for Premier League survival. He started 20 League One games and scored three goals.

Rotherham’s relegation to League Two was confirmed last month, yet Gray stood out and supplied an assist in Saturday’s 3-2 defeat at Wycombe on the final weekend. He had earlier scored twice in his first four outings.

A hamstring strain in March saw him return to Thorp Arch for treatment, missing around three weeks before rejoining in early April. By then Matt Hamshaw, the head coach who signed him, had been sacked and Lee Clark took charge. Gray netted in a 2-0 win over Leyton Orient, points that only delayed relegation.

He kept close to boyhood club Leeds, spotted in the away end at Old Trafford for a historic 2-1 win in April, and pictured at Wembley for the FA Cup semi-final defeat to Chelsea.

Gray now heads back to West Yorkshire for talks on next season. With Leeds all but securing another Premier League year after Friday’s 3-1 win over Burnley, another loan could help maintain his regular minutes.
