Harry Gray has underlined his intent to break through at Leeds United, viewing his Rotherham United loan as a step towards that aim after his first senior start on Saturday.

The 17-year-old led Matt Hamshaw’s line-up against Stockport County, completed 90 minutes and impressed his manager, who said the outing would have taught him plenty and noted he finished with bloodied knees and a scratched face. Gray had scored 11 in 13 at youth level before moving.

“Once I knew I wasn't playing at Leeds this season, a loan was a thing that I wanted to do. I just wanted to go and get regular minutes in men's football,” he told the Rotherham Advertiser.

“Rotherham is close to home, which is a positive thing. It's not like I'm moving away, it's nothing too out of the ordinary. I'm still staying at home with my family.”

“I'm just a Leeds fan who happens to be a player. It's what I want to do, to play for Leeds. This is going to help me get there.”

Daniel Farke said stepping out of youth football made sense given how easily Gray had been scoring, adding that a striker must learn to win duels and cope with senior opponents, while joining a club willing to offer real minutes. He stressed Leeds could only bring him to the door of opportunity, and that if he delivers in League One he could perhaps earn chances at a higher level.
