Harry Maguire is facing the prospect of an extended ban before Manchester United’s meeting with Leeds United after an improper conduct charge. The 33-year-old is already suspended for one match following his red card.

He was sent off in the 78th minute of the 2-2 draw at Bournemouth for pulling down Evanilson in the area. Referee Stuart Attwell ruled it a denial of a goalscoring opportunity, leaving the England defender furious.

The Football Association confirmed the improper conduct charge in a statement. It alleges Maguire acted improperly and used abusive or insulting words or behaviour towards the fourth official after his dismissal. He has until Thursday 2 April to respond, and the automatic suspension will be served when Leeds visit Old Trafford on Monday 13 April.

An appeal against the charge would not affect the standard suspension. He would only be available if the red card were rescinded, which currently appears unlikely.

Michael Carrick criticised the decision, pointing to two comparable incidents involving Matheus Cunha and Amad Diallo, with one penalty awarded and the other not. United have no fixture this weekend following their FA Cup exit to Brighton in January. Leeds remain in the competition and travel to West Ham for their quarter-final on Sunday.
