Virgil van Dijk fires back at Wayne Rooney after criticism!

Harshly criticized by Rooney, Virgil van Dijk firmly puts the English legend in his place live
After defeating Real Madrid (1-0) at Anfield on Champions League matchday 4, Liverpool have rediscovered their form, but Virgil van Dijk couldn't escape controversy. The Reds captain, 34, felt compelled to calmly address Wayne Rooney's recent criticism, with the former England star accusing him of a lack of commitment since signing his contract extension.
Known for his composure and leadership, Van Dijk chose to respond with class.
“If you play for Liverpool and lose four or five games in a row, criticism is normal. But this time, it’s gone too far,” he said after the match.
The Dutch defender especially regrets how the media has amplified these kinds of statements:
“We live in a world where everyone can give their opinion, and those opinions are amplified. I think it’s a shame that a former player like Rooney says I stopped playing after signing a new contract. That’s unfair, and that’s my personal view.”
In 15 appearances this season, Van Dijk has proven he remains a key pillar in Jürgen Klopp’s squad, already netting two goals and delivering consistently high-level performances. Under contract until 2027, the Dutchman wanted to close the subject without animosity:
“I respect Rooney, but some comments cross the line. What matters is helping the team win, not responding to controversies.”
