Having a Rangers man back in the dugout is what fans needed

Barry Ferguson this year enjoyed the privilege of being a Rangers man in charge of the Famous. Sure, he wasn’t the best at it, and his spell could have been better, but it’s a dream of any former player to take charge and manage your boyhood heroes. Steven Smith Rangers.

Well Steven Smith is now the second man this calendar year to enjoy this privilege and the former Ibrox defender, a very honest and decent player in his day, will lead the side out at Ibrox on Saturday v Dundee Utd.

Smith speaks extremely well, being one of the most articulate in his field, with his punditry duties on Rangers TV impressing hugely and him these days being a well-respected coach with the Rangers U18s.

And now he gets temporary charge until further notice of the seniors.

He obviously isn’t a long term solution, whether down the line Smith fancies himself as taking the reins later in his career is up to him.

But we wish Smith the very best here.

It’s rare that a pundit has the knowledge, the insight, and the articulation to put it in a way anyone can understand it.

Even rarer when that pundit is a Rangers man.

But Smith is – and while we don’t expect miracles from him and his temporary staff this weekend, the lad deserves the team giving him everything they have.

It’s nice, after the four-month nightmare we endured under that imposter, that we have a real football and Rangers man in charge again.

We wish Steven Smith Rangers the best at his shot this weekend, and maybe just maybe our club is salvageable after all.
