Rolando Aarons had plenty of promise, but was unable to make good on that potential

There will always be massive 'what ifs' surrounding the career of former Newcastle United wonderkid Ronaldo Aarons, who finds himself without a club aged 30.

The two-capped Jamaican international was one of the brightest young stars to come out of the academy at St James' Park in the early 2010s, shining in bursts during the Magpies' final couple of Premier League years before their 2016 relegation to the Championship.

While that one year in the second tier could've given him a massive opportunity to impress at a lower level under legendary manager Rafa Benitez, his body couldn't stay healthy for the majority of that campaign.

After numerous loan spells, including at Sheffield Wednesday and Wycombe Wanderers, a move to Huddersfield Town couldn't revive his career, and after one year in the National League at Morecambe, Aarons now finds himself clubless.

Aarons joined Newcastle aged 17, after being released by hometown club Bristol City, who at the time were about to undergo a campaign finishing bottom of the Championship and suffering relegation back to League One.

The teenager took that move in his stride, and two years later was making his debut for the first team and making England Under-20 squads. The former saw him come off the bench in the opening game of the 2014/15 Premier League campaign against Manchester City in a 2-0 defeat.

His second league appearance off the bench against Crystal Palace saw him score the goal to level the game at 2-2 before assisting Mike Williamson for what Newcastle thought would be the winner, before a 95th-minute Wilfried Zaha effort forced the points to be shared.

Unfortunately, a hamstring issue on England Under-20 duty following that game ruled him out for six weeks and was the beginning of a long, tiresome career filled with injuries.

Nevertheless, upon his return, he started and scored at the Etihad Stadium in the EFL Cup as Newcastle stunned Manchester City in the EFL Cup. Remarkably, that stands as the most recent time the Magpies beat City in Manchester.

He was only 18 at the time, and many were starting to tip him for greatness.

Following that City display, Aarons would start against Liverpool in the Premier League. Afterwards, though, a recurrence of that hamstring injury would sideline him until the penultimate game of the campaign.

The following campaign, he was limited to just 10 league appearances all season due to calf and ankle problems, but did make a return on the final day, scoring and assisting in their 5-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur, with Newcastle already relegated ahead of it.

That final-day showcase gave Magpies fans some excitement over what the then-21-year-old could do in the Championship if he was fully fit. Unfortunately, his injury issues in that 2016/17 term were even worse.

He played the first four games of the season before suffering a broken foot and then an ACL injury in quick succession, curtailing his entire campaign.

Aarons made just five more Newcastle appearances after that, with his career at St James' effectively over. There may have been some hope that he could get a good string of games on loan elsewhere, but he struggled to even do that.

He spent time in Italy with Hellas Verona and in Czechia with Slovan Liberec before joining Steve Bruce's Sheffield Wednesday side in January 2019. He managed a run of seven straight starts - a run where the Owls went unbeaten - before an ankle injury ruled him out for the final seven games of the campaign.

A short-term loan to Wycombe to open the 2019/20 campaign followed that, and it was there that a 24-year-old Aarons opened up about his struggles with his injuries in an interview with The Athletic.

“I broke down a few times," he said. During my first season, I called my mum and cried down the phone after my hamstring injuries.

"Then, after my ACL operation, I ran a bath and couldn’t physically get into the tub. I just wept, thinking, ‘I’m the most unlucky footballer in the world.’ I got into a dark place, mentally. I didn’t know anyone else who’d been through that experience, so I was trying to do it all myself.”

Aarons was on the cusp of returning to the Newcastle fold under Bruce in that 2019/20 term, before the arrivals of Emil Krafth and Allan Saint-Maximin pushed him out of the squad and to Wycombe. Two years later, he left for good for Huddersfield.

Aarons would start the first five games he played for Huddersfield in the latter half of the 2020/21 term, but injury struck again and ruled him out for two months.

Carlos Corberan didn't favour him and sent him back out on loan to Motherwell, and after his contract ran out in 2023, he'd be without a club until he signed a contract with Slovenian side Celje, where he played in Champions League, Europa League and Conference League qualifiers.

Last summer, he was without a club, though, and took part in the PFA pre-season camp, eventually landing a deal at Morecambe, a club in real free-fall, and he played a small part in their second consecutive relegation to National League North.

Aarons left at the end of the season and is still without a permanent home as the summer window closes, which is a real shame. The 30-year-old had so much promise as a teenager, but his body wasn't able to help fulfil that.
