Hebburn Town have re-signed former Sunderland academy striker Jake Waters on non-contract terms ahead of Saturday’s National League North opener against Southport, with a potential United States opportunity on the horizon.

According to Sunderland Echo, Waters returns after training with the Hornets throughout pre-season, while two professional clubs in the United States have invited him to train with them in the near future.

Waters was a regular scorer for Sunderland’s Under-16s and Under-18s, but his progress at Under-21 level was disrupted by two anterior cruciate ligament injuries, keeping him out for over 400 days in total.

He joined Spennymoor on loan in January, then moved to Hebburn two months later and helped Daniel Moore’s side clinch a surprise Northern Premier League Premier Division title in May. He returned to Sunderland after the season and was released when his contract expired.

Moore said Waters will still go to the United States, although there is no final date and it could be a few months. In the meantime he will be part of Hebburn’s squad on a non-contract basis, with the manager pleased to keep him involved.
