What began as a tense and cautious Bundesliga clash between Union Berlin and Heidenheim quickly turned into a match full of late drama. Union dominated early chances, with Khedira finishing from Ansah’s layoff to give the hosts a 1–0 lead before halftime.
The second half was slower, with both teams hesitant to dominate possession, leading to unprecise attacks. But in a dramatic twist, Heidenheim turned the game on its head in injury time: Schimmer equalized in the 90th minute, and Schöppner sealed a surprise 2–1 victory in the 95th, completing a breathtaking comeback and leaving Union stunned.
Here is our full match report:
Both sides opened the match struggling to build sustained spells of possession. Longer passing sequences often broke down, leaving the early phases disjointed. Even so, Heidenheim nearly stunned the home crowd in the 9th minute, when Honsak unleashed a strike that rattled the crossbar - the visitors’ best moment of the half.
Shortly after, Heidenheim endured a brief injury scare. In an aerial duel, Dorsch and Niehues clashed heads, leaving both players down and needing treatment. Fortunately, each was eventually able to continue.
Union grew into the match gradually, and their first real opportunity came in the 41st minute. Captain Trimmel delivered a precise corner that found Diogo Leite, whose header beat the goalkeeper but drifted just half a meter wide of the post.
But Union refused to let the half drift away. In the 43rd minute, another Trimmel involvement paved the way: he played the ball into the box, where Ansah cleverly laid it off for Khedira, who calmly slotted the ball home to give the hosts the opening goal.
The final minutes of the half saw Union completely take control, launching a sustained power play that produced chance after chance as Heidenheim struggled to regain their footing. Union headed into the break with momentum firmly on their side - and Heidenheim with plenty to sort out.
The second half at the Stadion An der Alten Försterei began cautiously, with both Union Berlin and Heidenheim sizing each other up. Similar to the start of the first half, neither team seemed eager to dominate possession, resulting in quick, imprecise attacks that failed to threaten either goal for much of the opening 30 minutes.
Then, in a surprising turn, Heidenheim shifted the momentum, launching a sustained power play against the hosts. The visitors’ pressure steadily grew, putting Union under real duress and creating a series of dangerous opportunities that Union struggled to manage.
Their persistence finally paid off in injury time. Schimmer found the back of the net in the 90th minute, bringing Heidenheim level and leaving Union players visibly frustrated after a crucial defensive lapse.
But the drama was far from over. In the 95th minute, Schöppner capitalized on the chaos and slotted home the winner, completing a breathtaking turnaround and giving Heidenheim a 2–1 victory.
The win not only marked a remarkable late comeback but also gave Heidenheim a much-needed morale boost, as the visitors claimed their first victory in some time. Union Berlin, meanwhile, were left stunned by the dramatic collapse in the closing minutes.
Final Result: Union Berlin 1–2 Heidenheim
