Fresh from their first win since September, Heidenheim started the game positively. From an early set-piece opportunity, Noah Atubolu needed medical attention as he was fouled by Marvin Pieringer in a crowded penalty box. The hosts also had the first big chance of the game in the 20th minute when Mathias Honsak was left unmarked on the right flank.
The Austrian had another attempt ten minutes later, while Freiburg struggled to get into the game. However, Johan Manzambi put them in front five minutes before the half-time break with his third goal in as many matches. The Swiss international found the net with a brilliant effort from outside the box. That was Freiburg’s only chance of the half, while Niklas Dorsch attempted a scissor-kick as Heidenheim sought an equalizing goal.
Tim Siersleben and Bayern’s loanee Arijon Ibrahimovic were introduced for the second-half, but Freiburg dominated the early proceedings after the restart. However, once again, the next goal came out of the blue.
Heidenheim’s captain Patrick Mainka leveled the score with a simple finish from the far post as Lukas Kübler slipped in the worst of times. Both teams scored from their first shots on target, but the game suddenly came to life with chances at either end in the next ten minutes.
Yet, Diant Ramaj and Atubolu hadn’t made any saves. Heidenheim had chances to take the lead before Yuito Suzuki and Maximilian Eggestein came very close with decent attempts. Heidenheim then stunned Freiburg with Stefan Schimmer’s clinical injury-time finish.
Schimmer scored the first goal in last week’s come-from-behind win as they found the net twice after the 90th minute against Union Berlin. Although they still need more than the back-to-back victories to get out of the drop zone, the momentum is now on their side two weeks before the Winterpause.
Following their home game against Salzburg, Freiburg will entertain Borussia Dortmund on matchday 14. Heidenheim await a relegation six-pointer away at St. Pauli.
