Lazio finally managed to end their four-match winless streak, as they return to Rome with three points in the bag thanks to an own-goal from Hellas Verona.

Lazio Starting Lineup

With Toma Basic ruled out with a slight injury, Fisayo Dele-Bashiru still active in AFCON with Nigeria, and Reda Belahyane suffering a fever, Maurizio Sarri gave Kenneth Taylor his full debut less than 48 hours after his transfer from Ajax.

The Dutchman joined Danilo Cataldi and Matias Vecino in a makeshift midfield, while Tijjani Noslin led the line, supported by Gustav Isaksen and Matteo Cancellieri, who started on the left wing in the absence of the suspended Mattia Zaccagni.

A Below-Par First Half

There was little to report from the Bentegodi after the 45 minutes. Lazio only threatened with an early chance, but Isaksen’s shot was blocked, while Noslin couldn’t connect well with the ball on the rebound, as his header went high.

In the 45th minute, we finally witnessed the first shot on target in the match, as Domagoj Bradarić tried to find the far corner with a curling attempt from the edge of the box, but Ivan Provedel was able to get across to pull off the save.

Verona & Lazio Remained Cautious in Second Half

The action didn’t instantly improve after the break, but the game became more stretched in the final 20 minutes as the two sets of players began to tire. Adam Marusic tested Lorenzo Montipo with a close-range free-kick, but his shot was too central.

On the other end of the pitch, Nicolo Rovella lost Amin Sarr, who picked up Antoine Bernede. The latter had better options, but decided to go for the goal himself. However, he could hit the wrong sit of the net.

Manuel Lazzari Breaks the Deadlock After Slow Burn

In the 79th minute, Manuel Lazzari emerged as the unlikely hero. The right-back made a timely run to the box, and Cancellieri managed to feed him with a clever through ball. The Lazio veteran’s shot was blocked by Victor Nelson, whose touch saw the ball chip over Montipo’s desperately overstretched hand.

Lazio managed to cling to their narrow lead, but still had to overcome a late scare. The Verona players insisted they deserved a spot-kick following an incident between Provedel and Nicolas Valentini. However, the VAR ruled in favor of the Biancocelesti for once, confirming the referee’s on-field decision.
