Kim Hellberg gave a positive update on Leo Castledine ahead of Middlesbrough’s top of the table clash against Coventry on Monday night.
Castledine has missed the last two games for Boro but is closing in on a return.
Boro boss Hellberg said: “He’s getting better and better. We’ll see if this game comes too early or not, but soon he will be back.”
However, Boro duo Alfie Jones and Alex Bangur remain out for the longer term.
Speaking about the pair, Hellberg said: “There are some weeks left. If you want to have a date, it’s around international break maybe.”
The Boro manager also spoke about competition in the squad as more players return from injury. Against Sheffield United, Hellberg selected an unchanged 11 for the first time this season.
Hellberg said: “Jeremy Sarmiento is getting in from also not playing so much, but he looked on fire today and David Strelec is getting back from that injury he had and there’s a lot of good players.”
Boro currently lead the line in the Championship on 61 points, two points clear of Coventry. On Monday night, a win for either side would be a huge boost for their title-winning prospects.
Hellberg said: “We’re going to go there and try to take control of the game. We’re going to go there to play the way we want to play. We want to go there to be ourselves. That’s the most important thing.
“Whatever the result will be, we will do the same thing as we always do. We need to get better.”
