Sheffield United boss Wilder provides update on the future of Coventry City target Hamer | OneFootball

Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder has confirmed the club are considering a bid for Gustavo Hamer amid interest from former club Coventry City.

Hamer has entered the final year of his contract at Bramall Lane, with Coventry keen on bringing the midfielder back to the club.

Wilder admitted there is a decision to be made over the Brazil midfielder’s future, with the Sheffield United board currently considering the offer.

“There’s been a bid in for Gus and that is being discussed by the owners,” Wilder said.

The Blades are reluctant to allow Hamer to leave for nothing after paying a significant fee to sign him from Coventry three years ago.

“Our policy as a football club is that we don’t like players leaving on free transfers, especially when we’ve paid a decent fee,” Wilder explained.

“We’re trying to get the right fee that we feel is equivalent to the player’s standing and relevant to what we feel that he’s worth.

“We’re not going to get rolled over. So that’s a decision. There’ll be an input from me, my thoughts on it. But ultimately it’s a decision made by the board to accept or not accept.”

Wilder also suggested Hamer’s own ambitions could play a major role in determining whether he remains at Sheffield United.

“Cards on the table, and I’m not chucking Gus under the bus, but Gus is ambitious,” he said.

“And he’s an opportunity of potentially a big increase on his salary, a length on the contract and going to a club where he’s really highly thoughtof.

“So, you know, does he want to stay here? If he wanted to stay here, then we would have engaged in contract negotiations.

“And that hasn’t been the case.”

Wilder insists he does not want to lose Hamer, but accepts the club may have little choice if the midfielder does not commit his future to the Blades.

“But I don’t want to lose him, of course I don’t, because he’s a top player,” he said.

“If he doesn’t want to engage in contract talks … I mean, he might engage in contract talks if we give him £100,000 a week.

“But we’re not going to give him £100,000 a week, are we? So, there you go. There’s a pretty simple answer to that.”

Wilder also compared the situation to Andre Brooks, who recently left the club after deciding to pursue a more lucrative opportunity elsewhere.

The Sheffield United boss made clear, however, that should Hamer remain beyond the transfer window, he will continue to expect the midfielder to give everything for the club.

“When the window shuts, if he’s here, he’ll play and he’ll have to give his everything to the shirt, which is everything that I demand,” Wilder said.
