Lauren Hemp rounded off what was a delightful evening at Villa Park for Manchester City on Sunday when she popped up with the fourth goal to secure all three points, but she wasn’t totally happy.

So, while the three points and four more goals look good for City in terms of a start to the season and the league table, Hemp, who also ticked over 100 WSL goal contributions against Villa, was desperate for something more important in their own defensive third.

“It’s a great result,” Hemp told Sky Sports post-match.

“It’s obviously nice to score goals and to give it to Bunny; she’s always scoring.

The Hemp and Shaw combination was familiar to everyone last season, and it’s showing no signs of slowing down in the 2026/27 campaign.

While the goals were pleasing for Hemp, it’s clean sheets which the whole team pride themselves on, she added.

“It’s always nice to contribute; we’ve been working hard in pre-season to make sure our performances show when it matters.

“We pride ourselves on clean sheets, so we want to work on that, but we’re in a good space and confident at the moment.”

There were four different goalscorers for Jeglertz’s side against Villa, showing that, while Shaw is a constant threat through the middle, City can easily share out the goals across the pitch.

“We’ve had different goalscorers in our games so far,” Hemp said. “And it’s important getting the momentum into the next game.”
