The proposed bid from James Bord fell through last week

Sheffield Wednesday are back to square one regarding their takeover, after the consortium led by former professional poker player James Bord pulled out last week.

The consortium had been named the preferred bidder to take over the Owls exactly nine weeks earlier, but, stillin the process of undergoing the EFL owners and directors' test, they decided that the club's valuation was lower than the £47.8 million they reportedly offered to buy the club.

This has plunged Sheffield Wednesday back into a period of uncertainty, but it has been reported that Mike Ashley and the Storch family have retained their interest in buying the club, and the administrators at Begbies Traynor have either met or received contact with interested parties.

On the pitch, Wednesday's fate has already been sealed, with their relegation being confirmed over a week ago via defeat in the Steel City derby against rivals Sheffield United.

However, without an owner in place, the ability to rebuild and go again next season is being delayed, and everyone associated with the club, no more so than manager Henrik Pedersen, is getting slightly restless with having to wait for next year's ideas to be put in place.

Sheffield Wednesday were beaten once again last Saturday against Southampton. They've still yet to pick up any points in 2026, and have now lost 12 consecutive Championship games.

The focus, evidently, is on how they are going to stop the rot and avoid sliding even further down the EFL next season, but that focus is slightly obscured without the confirmation of a new owner in place.

Therefore, speaking to the Sheffield Star after the Southampton defeat, Owls boss Henrik Pedersen stated that he hopes that things can progress "as quick as possible" when it comes to finding a new preferred bidder.

"I think I have the same feeling as all the players, all the staff, all the coaches, all the fans and the potential new owner. Everyone wants it to go as quick as possible so we can start to plan the future," he said.

"We need to start to get fresh air in so we can all start to look forward and not only survive. We have so much to do right now to let the ship go. To make all those performances in training and in games.

"Right now, I have some clear ideas. But, yes, we're all looking forward to the new owners coming in, and then we can take it from there."

Sheffield Wednesday can't have their eyes on next season until a new owner is in place

Everyone associated with the Hillsborough-based club can't wait to forget everything associated with this season. Although with the grey cloud of uncertainty surrounding the new owners still hanging over them, it's difficult to fully look at next season with optimism.

Right now, Wednesday needs a reset. The relegation to League One will help, but as it stands, they won't have the resources available to improve their team, and, if a purchase isn't made soon, there may not even be a team to reset, as administrators can't run the club forever.

Luckily, there seem to be numerous backup plans available for Kris Wigfield and the rest of the administrative team. Additionally, someone like Mike Ashley will likely have little trouble passing the EFL's Owners and Directors' test, too, which would ideally make the purchase swift.
