Following a series of rapid developments over the past couple of days, Barcelona midfielder Ilkay Gundogan is all set to return to Manchester City this summer.

Indeed, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that the German veteran is on his way back to the Etihad Stadium just a year after moving to Catalonia, giving his trademark ‘Here we go’ seal to the transfer.

Gundogan to join on a free transfer

Gundogan signed for Barcelona last year on a free transfer after his contract at Manchester City expired.

The 33-year-old midfielder signed a two-year contract until 2025 with an option for an additional year and enjoyed a brilliant debut campaign, finishing as one of Barça’s best players.

With Hansi Flick taking over the reins as manager, it was expected that Gundogan would have a prominent role in the side, but that is not how things have panned out.

Given the club’s urgent need to create salary space to register Dani Olmo and any other new signing that might come in, coupled with the plethora of options for the No. 10 role, Barcelona have decided to sacrifice Gundogan.

The former Manchester City captain will be returning to the Premier League champions on a free transfer, with Barcelona happy to waive off any fee as long as they get rid of his salary.

Gundogan and Manchester City have reached an agreement over a contract until the summer of 2025, with manager Pep Guardiola happy to welcome his former captain back to the team.

As mentioned above, the midfielder still has two years left on his contract at Barcelona but has decided to waive them off as he closes in on a transfer to Manchester City.
