Hertha Berlin have given goalkeeper Marius Gersbeck a “second chance” and have reintroduced him back into the first-team squad.

The 28-year-old was suspended in July this year following an incident in Salzburg when the team were on a training camp during the international break.

Gersbeck was accused of being involved in an altercation, leaving another man needing hospital treatment. The goalkeeper had only been with his native club for one month when the incident occurred, having joined them following relegation from the Bundesliga.

However, with the charges dropped, Gersbeck has been granted a second chance.

Managing Director Thomas E. Herrich explained: “Since the case against Marius Gersbeck was dropped, it has been clear that there will be no criminal conviction. Marius has also shown insight and remorse to us as a club, but we continue to condemn his off-duty misconduct in the strongest terms and, of course, have never lost sight of the fact that the injured party suffered serious injuries. In the past few days we have consulted with our committees and discussed this. Marius gets a second chance. His suspension is lifted, but he receives a warning and a hefty fine from the club. In the foreseeable future, Marius will again take part in the training of the professional team under certain conditions.”

Gersbeck made his Bundesliga debut with Hertha back in 2013 at the age of 18. He then had loan spells at Chemnitzer and VfL Osnabruck before signing for Karlsruher SC in 2019.

The goalkeeper joins up with his colleague, who are 12th in the 2. Bundesliga table following defeat last weekend to St. Pauli.
