Marseille striker Amine Gouiri (25) has heaped praise on OM head coach Roberto De Zerbi, who led Les Phocéens to second place for his first-ever campaign in Ligue 1. The former Brighton and Hove Albion FC head coach successfully brought Marseille back to the Champions League. Speaking to L’Equipe, Gouiri said De Zerbi deserves more recognition after leading Marseille to second place, in stark contrast to Brest manager Eric Roy’s diatribe. “For everyone, it’s normal that he came second with this squad”, Gouiri said. “But it’s his first season in Ligue 1, he didn’t know the league, he has a new team… He’s doing great.”

The Algerian international has lifted the lid on what Roberto De Zerbi is like behind the scenes in training. The former Lyon and Nice forward has described the Italian as a very demanding head coach. “He knows how to put things into perspective and have a laugh, but when he’s on the pitch, he’s something else. If you miss a pass, he can shout at you.” Gouiri adds that players follow De Zerbi’s lead because they understand it’s for their own good. “Some players can’t handle pressure, but that is what high-level is all about.

Gouiri said it was “outrageous” that Roberto De Zerbi was not named among Ligue 1’s best coaches for the UNFP Awards. The Italian was snubbed, unlike Adi Hütter and Bruno Genesio, who both finished the season below Marseille in the Ligue 1 standings with Monaco and Lille. “I see him every day, and let me tell you, he’s a great coach.”
