La Liga champions Barcelona have this week been urged to sanction the sale of a member of the club’s backline.
The player in question? Ronald Araújo.
Stopper Araújo is for his part of course fresh off another outing to forget on Sunday.
Returning to Barcelona’s starting XI for the club’s La Liga meeting with Sevilla, the Uruguayan was heavily criticised for giving away a needless first-half penalty.
So disappointing was the general level of his performance, that Hansi Flick made the call to hook Araújo from the action at half-time.
This only provided the Blaugrana faithful with fresh ammo to direct at a player who has long been under fire in Catalunya’s capital.
And adding his name to the growing list of Araújo’s critics on Monday was a former member of the defensive ranks at Liverpool.
Speaking as part of his role as a pundit on Sky Sports, as cited by Diario Sport, Jamie Carragher revealed his take that Deco and co. should seek out a new club for the defender at the earliest opportunity:
“Every time Barça face an elite opponent, he disconnects and that is costing them dearly. If Barça want to do well, they must sell him for sure.”
Carragher continued:
“I like the attitude with which Araujo faces matches, but there comes a time when passion is not enough. Defending at this level is based on decision-making and not just tackles. And there Araujo has a deficit that ends up hurting his team in decisive moments and games of the season.”
