Karim Adeyemi has seen little playing time for Borussia Dortmund recently, having made brief appearances off the bench in their last two games against Mainz and Atalanta.
According to former Dortmund goalkeeper Roman Weidenfeller, the 24-year-old needs to step up his game.
"Right now, he mostly comes off the bench, and I have to say, I just wish for Karim that he wasn’t only the difference-maker on paper, but also on the pitch. At the moment, he’s not in top form, and when he comes on, he loses too many balls," Weidenfeller said on the Sky show “Triple – der Hagedorn-Fussballtalk”.
If Adeyemi's dip in form continues, he risks missing out on the German World Cup squad.
“If he’s not playing, he won’t go to the World Cup either. You shouldn’t take anyone to the World Cup if they’re not playing at their club,” said the 2014 World Cup winner.
Overall, however, Weidenfeller is pleased with Dortmund’s recent performances, with his former club sitting just six points behind Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich ahead of their clash next week.
Before that, though, BVB face a challenging away game against RB Leipzig on Saturday – and Weidenfeller says a win could spark a real title race."
“If Borussia Dortmund perform in Leipzig now, we definitely have [a title race] again,” he said.
“It’s a game-changer match. If Dortmund can win away at RB Leipzig, then we can also do it at home against Bayern. The stadium will be on fire. Anything is possible. And I’m predicting a home win against Bayern.”
