The Azzurri needed a strong response after the opening 2-0 home defeat to Belgium, while Vincenzo Montella’s side were beaten 1-0 by France.

Roberto Mancini’s men came out fighting and broke the deadlock with Bastoni on his first appearance since the red card in that World Cup play-off against Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Kayode had two almost identical moves, the first parried into the path of Frattesi, the second scored himself at the near post.

Pio Esposito was ready on the rebound from Sandro Tonali’s effort off the upright with a diving header.

Baris Alper Yilmaz got one back for the hosts, and saw another goal ruled offside for a teammate interfering with play.

Italy are back in action against France in Paris on Friday at 19.45 UK time (20.45 CEST).
