Hoffenheim star Wouter Burger (25) signs contract extension | OneFootball

TSG Hoffenheim have officially confirmed an early contract extension for Dutch midfielder Wouter Burger. The Bundesliga club did not disclose the precise length of the 25-year-old’s new agreement, but described the deal as a long-term commitment.

Burger only joined Hoffenheim from Stoke City last summer. The Kraichgau club paid approximately €5m to bring the midfielder back to continental European football after two seasons in the English Championship.

Over the course of a highly successful Bundesliga campaign, Burger’s estimated market value has skyrocketed from €4.5m to €20m in the last 15 months. 

Initially signed as a replacement for Anton Stach, Burger quickly established himself as one of Hoffenheim’s most important players. The former Feyenoord and Basel professional started all 30 of his Bundesliga appearances during his debut campaign, scoring four goals and registering eight assists.

Burger initially worked alongside former Basel teammate Leon Avdullahu in a double-six formation. The partnership provided Christian Ilzer’s side with physicality, ball-winning quality and two midfielders capable of advancing possession with their passing.

His role evolved as Hoffenheim moved away from their early-season structure and increasingly adopted a 4-1-4-1 system. Avdullahu generally operated as the deepest midfielder, while Burger and Grischa Prömel were given greater freedom to advance into the final third.

The positional adjustment enabled Burger to become a considerably greater attacking threat. His development was particularly evident when he scored twice in a Bundesliga victory over Wolfsburg. Burger later explained that Hoffenheim’s coaching staff had encouraged him to enter the penalty area more frequently rather than remaining behind the ball.

The Dutchman’s influence extended beyond his goals. He supplied two assists in Hoffenheim’s 3–1 away victory over Eintracht Frankfurt in January and consistently offered the team a combination of defensive power and late runs into attacking positions.

Burger also emerged as one of the leaders of a significantly improved Hoffenheim side. His first season in the Bundesliga ended with the club securing European football, while his individual performances reportedly generated interest elsewhere.

Speaking in February, Burger credited his spell at Stoke with helping him become physically stronger and better prepared for the intensity of German football. He also discussed the influence of former Feyenoord coach Arne Slot on his tactical development and expressed confidence that Hoffenheim could continue competing near the top of the Bundesliga.

The new agreement represents Hoffenheim’s ninth early contract extension involving a key member of last season’s squad. Burger will now have the opportunity to make his first appearance in the Europa League proper. He previously contested five Europa League qualifying matches and has accumulated 20 Conference League appearances, scoring twice.
