The Premier League, La Liga, Bundesliga and Serie A have united to demand sweeping reform of FIFA governance, criticising Gianni Infantino, its president since 2016.

According to L'Équipe, their senior executives issued a joint paper, titled “Pour unifier le football, la FIFA doit se réformer”, setting out a case for structural change.

The leagues argue Infantino has been too open to conflicts of interest and has promoted exploitation over the wider interest, a stance they say endangers football’s historical foundations. They reject superficial tweaks and call for fundamental reform to restore clear constitutional limits, including shielding individual disciplinary matters from political interference.

Their push centres on effective checks and the preservation of FIFA’s independence, with the president subject to real oversight across regulatory, commercial and political functions. They also criticise FIFA’s World Cup focus, noting only 1% of professional players take part, and say the swollen international calendar harms domestic competitions.

The four leagues want a transparent, proportionate and inclusive model of governance and greater involvement in decisions, rather than being passive spectators. They urge candidates in the 2027 FIFA presidential election to set out positions on these issues and to respect fair electoral rules.

They invite confederations, national associations, leagues, clubs, players’ unions, supporters’ groups and public authorities on every continent to join the initiative, arguing it is time to decide both how FIFA leads football and how FIFA should be led. France’s LFP has not joined the move.
