The 62-year-old from Saltburn-on-Sea is widely respected in the region after spells with Sunderland and Middlesbrough. His career has also included Ipswich Town, Hibernian, West Bromwich Albion, Celtic, Coventry City, Blackburn Rovers and Birmingham City as a player or manager.

The association praised his fortitude, quiet dignity and passion, saying he bridges traditional rivalries, while Mowbray said he felt honoured and proud of the region’s values.

He recalled Ayresome Park visits as a seven-year-old to watch Jack Charlton’s 70s side.

He made his league debut at St. James’ Park in 1982 against Kevin Keegan and Mick Channon, and later felt Sunderland’s warmth at the Stadium of Light.

He said the region’s passion runs through stadiums and communities.

NEFWA secretary Colin Young called him a popular choice, praising his honesty, humility, community work and courage amid health issues.

Other winners are Sunderland’s Dan Ballard, Men’s Player of the Year, Katie Kitching of Sunderland, Women’s Player of the Year, Newcastle United’s Lewis Miley, Young Men’s Player of the Year, and Sunderland’s Katy Watson, Young Women’s Player of the Year.
