Derby County have made a £1m proposal to Bristol City for Zak Vyner
Bristol City are set to reject an offer worth £1 million from Derby County for Zak Vyner.
According to journalist Ron Walker, the Robins have turned down an approach from their Championship rivals for the 28-year-old.
Vyner is entering the final 12 months of his contract with Bristol City, leading to speculation over his immediate future.
The defender played every minute of the Championship campaign last season, including in both legs of the semi-finals of the play-offs, with Liam Manning’s side finishing sixth in the table.
However, it’s believed that Bristol City are going to turn down this bid, even with the player’s contract status.
The Robins don’t have a strong negotiating position, as the Kenya international will be free to depart the club at the end of the upcoming season unless an extension can be agreed.
The Rams are looking to bolster their side ahead of their second year back in the division, with John Eustace hoping to improve on their 19th place finish.
However, Gerhard Struber will also be keen to hold onto any key players from the Bristol City squad after they earned a top six finish last year under Manning.
It remains to be seen whether Derby will return with a fresh proposal for Vyner after this £1 million bid is set to be rejected.
Bristol City appointed Struber earlier in the summer after Manning made the move to Norwich City.
The Austrian has so far overseen the arrivals of Emil Riis, Joe Lumley, Adam Randell and Yu Hirakawa to Ashton Gate.
His first game in charge of the club will come away to Sheffield United on 9 August in a 5.30pm kick-off.
A £1 million offer for Vyner, even if he is on the final year of his contract, was always unlikely to convince Bristol City to cash in.
The Robins are in a tricky position because of the player’s deal expiring, but he has proven such a valuable member of the team that it will have to take more than £1 million to sign him.
Vyner could be a smart signing for Derby, but Bristol City will be looking for much more for someone who was so vital last year.
It would not be surprising if the Rams did come back in with an improved offer, but Bristol City may risk losing him for nothing next year given his importance to the side.
