Bristol City have rejected a second bid from Wrexham for defender Zak Vyner.
Bristol City have turned down a second offer of £2m from Wrexham for Zak Vyner, although both clubs are in still talks over a potential transfer ahead of tomorrow’s 7pm deadline.
The Red Dragons have spent heavily following their promotion to the Championship as they look to continue their remarkable rise under their Hollywood owners.
Conor Coady and Callum Doyle are among the defensive additions to have arrived, but Phil Parkinson is pushing to bring in Vyner, with Bristol City previously turning down a £1.75m offer for the player.
That hasn’t deterred Wrexham though, as Sky Sports reporter Anthony Joseph revealed that they have returned with a fresh bid of £2m, but that has once again been rejected by their Championship rivals.
However, it might not be the end of the matter, as the update also states that talks are ongoing between the clubs as they look to come to an agreement.
Whilst Vyner is an important figure for the Robins, having played in every game under Gerhard Struber this season, his situation is complicated by the fact that he has entered the final 12 months of his contract at Ashton Gate.
Vyner was an ever-present for Bristol City last season, playing in all 48 league and play-off matches for the club whose academy he came through, but he may now be ready for a new challenge at the age of 28.
The contract issue has put Bristol City in a difficult position, as they will not want to risk losing the 28-year-old on a free next year, so suitable offers will have to be considered.
In truth, you can see why they have rejected an offer of £2m, but every player has a price and the fact that discussions are continuing between the clubs means that Wrexham feel there is a deal to be done here.
For the Red Dragons, the win at Millwall will be a huge relief, as it was their first of the season, and they will hope it is the catalyst for a good run of form.
Even though the defence stood firm at The Den, with Doyle making a big difference, they have been unconvincing at times this season, so the interest in Vyner is understandable.
He has proven himself to be a good, reliable defender at this level over the years, and he would add quality and depth to Parkinson’s squad in defence.
So, it will be interesting to see if this gets done, and Bristol City will have to be on the lookout for a replacement if they do sanction a transfer, as he would be missed.
