Slot was set an ultimatum

According to journalist David Lynch, via TeamTalk, the pressure was firmly on Slot end the rut.

Speaking to Anfield Index, he said: "You knew coming into this [West Ham game] that Liverpool needed a win because of the pressure that the manager was under.

"I do genuinely believe that if he had lost this game against West Ham, then that would've been the end of Arne Slot as Liverpool manager. It seems crazy to say, but you can't keep losing games and it gets to the point where there is a breaking point, no matter how much belief you have in him."

Whether a draw would've sufficed, given how close Jarrod Bowen was to equalising the contest before Cody Gakpo scored the Reds' second to close out the game, I suppose we'll never know.

And in having won that game, Slot's position isn't automatically secure now. You would presume FSG take things on a game-by-game basis, although Liverpool rarely make reactionary management calls.

In context, the team is just a few wins away from being in a really solid position with regard to securing European football next season, which would be a great bit of damage limitation this season.

A different report from TeamTalk, the Reds' owners FSG are said to not have any replacements lined up for Slot, which is possibly the most backing the Dutchman could possibly be given right now. Of course, there might be preferences, but all the effort is being put into helping him turn things around.

But the performance against Sunderland on Wednesday night might well have put things into doubt again. The 'solution' found against West Ham was abandoned at half-time, with Salah coming on for Cody Gakpo, and with Curtis Jones replacing Joe Gomez at right back after 65 minutes.

Unless the disappointing performances and results continue into the second half of the season, it's likely that Slot will see out the remainder of the campaign at least, but plenty believe that Slot is on thin ice for the foreseeable and week-in week-out, the debates will continue to rage on.
