Luton Town have rejected an enquiry from Oxford United for Isaiah Jones and the wide-man's stance on potentially returning to the Championship before Monday’s transfer deadline has now been revealed.

The U’s have had a positive start to life under Matt Bloomfield, with the ex-Wycombe chief yet to taste defeat since he was announced as Gary Rowett’s successor, having picked up five points from three games.

However, Oxford remain in deep trouble as they fight to stay in the Championship, with the team three points from safety ahead of Saturday’s home game against Birmingham.

Therefore, the final few days of the window could be crucial for Bloomfield and the recruitment team as they look to strengthen the squad, and it appears Jones is on their radar, with the boss knowing the player from his brief time in charge of the Hatters.

That’s after the Sky Sports Transfer Centre (14:23) revealed that the Championship strugglers made an enquiry for the 26-year-old, but it was turned down by Luton.

But, it may not be the end of the matter, as the update also claims that Jones is ‘open to a return to the Championship’, although there’s no suggestion that he is pushing to move on from Kenilworth Road.

Interestingly, they add that there is further interest from Championship clubs, so Oxford could have competition for his signature if they do decide to return with a formal offer despite Luton’s stance.

Isaiah Jones could be a gamble worth taking for Oxford United

It’s fair to say that Jones’ move to Luton hasn’t really gone to plan, with injury issues restricting him to just four appearances in League One this season.

Yet, it’s not that long ago that Jones was impressing in the Championship with Middlesbrough, where his pace and dribbling ability made him such a threat, and a joy to watch at times.

Sadly, he has struggled for consistency over the years, but, given his age, you can see why clubs in the second tier are willing to take a chance on the player this month.

From Jack Wilshere’s perspective, you can understand why Luton are keen on keeping the player, but you would imagine they could be tempted by a sale if a suitable offer is tabled.

Firstly, Jones is under contract until the summer of 2027, so his value is only going to drop over the next two windows, whilst in Shayden Morris, the Hatters have a player with a similar profile to Jones.

So, it will be intriguing to see how this plays out, and whether Oxford do go all-out to bring Jones back to the Championship.
