Comparing Jack Clarke's Ipswich wages with what he was earning at Sunderland
Jack Clarke made the switch from Sunderland to Ipswich Town in the 2024 summer transfer window, ending long-term speculation surrounding his Wearside future to join the then-Premier League outfit.
The winger signed for the Tractor Boys in a deal worth a reported £15 million following their promotion to the Premier League.
The 24-year-old had impressed in the second division with the Black Cats, registering 15 goals in his final season, but was unable to cement himself as a key part of Kieran McKenna’s side in the top flight.
He contributed four assists from 32 appearances, with only 12 of those coming as a starter, as the club suffered relegation, while Sunderland earned promotion in the opposite direction.
Here we use estimated figures from Capology to compare Clarke’s salary at Portman Road to what he was earning on Wearside…
Clarke has made a strong start to the current season with Ipswich, scoring four goals from eight appearances prior to the October international break.
He and Jaden Philogene are competing for minutes on the left-flank of McKenna’s side, with the team eyeing promotion back to the Premier League.
After a disappointing first year at Portman Road, the forward will be hoping this positive start continues and he can get back to his very best.
Clarke signed a five year contract when he joined Ipswich, keeping him with the side until the summer of 2029 on a salary worth £25,000 per week.
This makes him an above average earner in the first team squad, with the mean weekly wage being around £19,000.
However, his salary falls short of being at the top echelon of what players make at Portman Road, with Dara O’Shea currently receiving more than any other player.
The defender is on a deal worth £35,000 per week since making his switch from Burnley in 2024.
Ashley Young, Azor Matusiwa and Ben Johnson are all also on £30,000 per week, with Darnell Furlong and George Hirst also making more than Clarke at salaries worth £27,500-a-week.
Clarke signed for Sunderland on an initial loan basis in January 2022, but he made the permanent switch after helping the club gain promotion that season.
The 24-year-old had struggled for first team opportunities at Tottenham Hotspur, and it was the move to the Stadium of Light that helped get his career back on track.
The ex-Spurs player was a key figure in the Championship for the Black Cats, which earned him a contract worth £16,923 per week.
He was the club’s top earner during his final season before moving to Ipswich, with the team coming an underwhelming 16th in the table.
The next highest wages at Sunderland at the time were for Dan Ballard and Bradley Dack, with the pair receiving £15,000 per week.
While Dack is longer at the Stadium of Light, Ballard proved a crucial part of the Black Cats’ promotion to the Premier League in 2024/25.
He even scored in the play-off semi-final, as well as bagging their second top flight goal in over eight years when he scored in their 3-0 victory over West Ham on the opening day.
