Sheffield Wednesday were officially relegated on Sunday afternoon
Sheffield Wednesday have officially been relegated to League One following their 2-1 loss to bitter rivals Sheffield United.
It has been a turbulent last 12 months for the Owls, and it has now culminated in the club suffering the drop down to the third division after just three seasons back in the Championship.
Henrik Pedersen’s side had the chance to prolong the inevitable with a win at Bramall Lane, but first half goals from Patrick Bamford and Harrison Burrows proved enough to seal all three points for the Blades despite Charlie McNeill’s second half strike.
The Yorkshire outfit have been in administration since October, but a preferred bidder was named in December in the form of the consortium led by James Bord.
The former poker player is hoping to seal a takeover of Sheffield Wednesday, but the club are still awaiting ratification from the EFL in order to complete the deal.
In the meantime, administrators Begbies Traynor are overseeing the day-to-day running of the Owls, while Bord covers their monthly financial losses.

Bord’s consortium was named as the preferred bidder on 24 December, but they are waiting for a decision from the EFL.
It has been reported that a decision could be another six weeks away, but the 45-year-old can still be planning for his first steps in charge of the Championship side.
One of the areas where the prospective new owners can begin planning is the coaching staff.
Pedersen has been in charge since Danny Rohl’s departure in the summer, and it is believed that resolving the Dane’s future is a priority for Bord.
The head coach extended his contract with Sheffield Wednesday in July before stepping up to replace Rohl, having previously been his assistant.
It’s understood that the 48-year-old will be due compensation if a change in the dugout will be made, which will be paid out by the new owners.
The prospective new owners have reportedly put together an exciting group to lead the Owls once the takeover is completed, including a former Scottish footballer.

Pedersen joined Sheffield Wednesday in October 2023 as part of Rohl’s coaching staff, and he played a role in the team surviving in the Championship for two seasons alongside the German.
The Owls earned a 20th and 12th place finish during his two seasons as an assistant, but financial issues plagued the team in this most recent campaign.
The Dane has overseen just one win from 37 games in charge since stepping up to become head coach.
The 2-1 loss to Sheffield United has confirmed the club’s relegation, with the team stuck on minus seven points in the table.
The Yorkshire outfit were handed 18 points worth of deduction penalties from the EFL this term due to multiple rule breaches.
But even so, they have won one, drawn eight and lost 24 of their 33 games in the league this campaign.
