Following the transfer saga involving Nico Williams last summer, which ended with them being unable to sign him, FC Barcelona’s leadership had been clear.

Starting from club president Joan Laporta himself, they did not want to hear Nico’s name again as a possible option this summer as they entered the market for attacking reinforcements.

Barcelona were upset by Nico

Indeed, according to Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona were left upset and frustrated when Nico rejected the transfer from Athletic Club last summer, citing doubts over the financial situation and issues with registration.

After all, the Blaugrana had made great efforts to bring the winger in and were prepared to activate his release clause until he decided to call off the move.

Within the club, it was stated that the door had been closed for the 22-year-old speedster. “You board the Barça train when it passes,” was the message from the administration.

Stance changed

This summer, however, Nico is willing to wear the Barcelona shirt, and he has made that clear to his Spanish national team teammates.

The Blaugrana were aware of this change in attitude, but the club held firm – until the player himself took a step forward which came this week.

Nico’s agent, Felix Tainta, communicated the player’s renewed interest directly to Barça sporting director Deco in a face-to-face meeting in Barcelona this past Friday.

This gesture has helped ease tensions, even though Liverpool attacker Luis Diaz remains the club’s top priority. At the very least, Nico is now back in the conversation.

Barcelona continue to work behind the scenes to bring the Colombian international, knowing Liverpool need to make some sales after investing heavily in new signings.

Meanwhile, Deco continues to keep alternatives in reserve – and the name of Nico Williams has now been added to the shortlist again after recent developments.

The 22-year-old attacker also has interest from Bayern Munich and Arsenal, in addition to a strong renewal offer from Athletic Club.

However, Nico is understood to be eager to play for Barcelona. He is aware he is not the first-choice option for the La Liga champions, but at least now, he is no longer ruled out.
