Liverpool welcome PSV Eindhoven to Anfield for tonight’s Champions League contest, looking to pick up the pieces after a deplorable run of results over the past couple of months.
The reigning Premier League champions are going through their worst run of form but are hoping the Champions League offers a reprieve from their domestic shortcomings.
Arne Slot’s Liverpool side hit a new low over the weekend. They were outmuscled, outplayed, and outmatched by relegation-battling Nottingham Forest in a thumping 3-0 defeat.
Having lost by a similar scoreline against Manchester City before the international break, the defeat against Forest saw Liverpool match a miserable record that was set six decades ago.
It was the first time the Reds had lost consecutive league games by a margin of three or more goals since the time of Bill Shankly back in April 1965.
Slot also became the first manager to oversee five consecutive Premier League defeats in 72 years, casting doubt on his long-term future at the club.
The morale in the Liverpool dressing room is at an all-time low, but Slot will hope his side can start to find their feet against their Eredivisie opponents.
Liverpool enters Wednesday’s Champions League clash with PSV searching for stability, and Slot’s biggest calls may come at the back before he even thinks about his misfiring attack.
Alisson is poised to make his third Champions League appearance of the season and his first since September, although his return didn’t make much of a difference against Forest.
Andrew Robertson is expected to replace Milos Kerkez at left back, lining up alongside Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate, and Dominik Szoboszlai in defence.
Curtis Jones was a bright spark for Liverpool in the Forest defeat and should be rewarded by reprising his role alongside Ryan Gravenberch and Alexis Mac Allister in midfield.
After making the worst-ever start for a British transfer record signing in over a century, Alexander Isak should drop to the bench in favour of Hugo Ekitike.
The Frenchman should be joined by Mohammed Salah and Cody Gakpo in attack.
