Grêmio have appointed Renato Portaluppi until the end of the season, his fifth spell, amid a relegation fight and a Copa do Brasil semi-final with Atlético-MG. The club announced it on Monday.

The 64-year-old club idol replaces Luís Castro after Sunday’s loss to Vasco, leaving Grêmio 16th on 28 points. He is their most-used coach with 543 matches.

His debut should be against Palmeiras on Sunday, while Felipão is expected to lead against Botafogo on Wednesday in a rescheduled 21st-round game, although plans could change.

His first spell began in August 2010 after Silas was sacked with Grêmio in trouble. A superb turnaround secured 2011 Libertadores qualification, then a last-16 exit to Universidad Católica and his June 2011 departure.

In 2013 he returned under president Fábio Koff to replace Vanderlei Luxemburgo, finished second in the Brasileirão and reached the Copa do Brasil semi-finals, then left after failing to agree terms.

From 2016 to 2021 he won the 2016 Copa do Brasil, ending a 15-year wait, plus the 2017 Libertadores, the 2018 Recopa and Gauchãos from 2018 to 2020. Libertadores defeats, 5-0 to Flamengo in 2019 and 4-1 to Santos in 2020, preceded his April 2021 exit.

From 2022 he guided promotion as Série B runners-up, then in 2023 finished second with Luís Suárez central. In 2024 he won the Gauchão, May floods submerged the Arena and forced games outside Rio Grande do Sul, and Grêmio ended 14th before he left in December.
