Josh Murphy has penned a contract extension with Portsmouth that lasts until 2028
Marlon Pack and Callum Lang are among the players to have responded to Portsmouth’s announcement of a contract extension agreement with Josh Murphy.
The 30-year-old has cemented himself as an important part of John Mousinho’s side since arriving from Oxford United in the 2024 summer transfer window.
He featured 42 times in the Championship last year, contributing an impressive seven goals and 14 assists as the team earned a 17th place finish.
And it has now been confirmed that the winger will now remain at Fratton Park until at least the summer of 2028 after putting pen to paper on a new deal, and he has done so whilst being on the sidelines with an ankle injury.
It was reported in the summer that Leicester City were interested in the attacker, but a deal never came to fruition, and now this development should put to bed any speculation on his immediate future with the club.
Murphy has expressed his delight at the agreement over a new deal with Portsmouth, indicating his commitment to the project being built at Fratton Park.
He’s claimed he’s looking forward to continuing to be a key part of the side, highlighting what he brings to the team as the club looks to improve on that 17th place finish from last year.
“So happy to be extending this journey at this Special Club,” wrote Murphy, via his Instagram.
“After buying into the Pompey way over the last year, it makes me hungry to keep repaying you crazy lot as well as the excitement at what we can achieve together!!
“I can't wait to be back out there with my brothers, running down the wing & slinging in some crosses.”
Teammates Pack and Lang both replied to express their joy at the news of Murphy’s new contract, with the former most looking forward to his great deliveries from out wide.
“I love it when you sling it in,” responded Pack, whilst Lang - who is also on the treatment table with Murphy after undergoing hamstring surgery recently - simply wrote: “Love this".
Portsmouth have had a mixed start to the new Championship season, but took a major scalp at the weekend when defeating previously unbeaten Middlesbrough 1-0 thanks to Yang Min-hyeok's goal - ironically he is the player who has replaced the injured Murphy in the starting 11.
When he returns though, Murphy will be key to Pompey climbing the second tier standings, with the club’s sights set on potentially earning a top half of the table finish.
Murphy was a standout performer for Portsmouth last year, and was key to the team comfortably surviving relegation back to League One in their first season back at second tier level.
Having helped Oxford United to win promotion from League One prior to his Fratton Park move, having scored twice in the play-off final against Bolton Wanderers, Murphy still had something to prove, but he did that and more in a blue shirt.
The summer interest from Leicester could’ve been tempting for the winger, but it’s difficult to see him enjoying the consistent game time and the acclaim of the supporters that he receives at Pompey.
Keeping him at Fratton Park until 2028 is great business for all parties, and that is clear from the reaction the news has received from Murphy’s teammates.
