The Boro midfielder gave an impassive response to the fact that they made up ground in the promotion race heading into the final week of the season

Middlesbrough finally rediscovered their goalscoring touch at the Riverside on Saturday, putting Watford to the sword with a dominant 5-1 win.

To put things into perspective, Kim Hellberg's side had scored five goals in their last eight home games combined, struggling to break down the likes of Oxford United and Portsmouth, and netting only once against Leicester City and Sheffield Wednesday in that time.

It was a much-needed and relieving win for Boro, who would have had their promotion ambitions questioned this time last week after failing to win in seven, but back-to-back wins have at least confirmed a play-off spot and shown that, when on their game, not many sides can keep up with them.

It also reignited an outside chance at finishing in the top two, as Ipswich Town could only settle for a point at West Brom while they were beating Watford. If the Tractor Boys are unable to beat Southampton in midweek, the race for second place will go down to the final day.

Understandably, Middlesbrough fans were delighted at the convincing win on Saturday and even more pleased by the fact that they gained two points on both Millwall and Ipswich, giving them a slim chance at climbing back into the top two right at the very last.

But the focus in the Boro camp before Saturday was on what they could do in their final couple of games, and it remains that way ahead of a trip to Wrexham on the final day.

When told about the Ipswich result on Saturday by BBC Tees, midfielder Aidan Morris responded, "cool." The American's deadpan answer reaffirms the dedication that the Middlesbrough players have towards finishing the season strong.

They'll have to rely on a lot of results going their way to land in the top two, as they'll likely have to better the results of Ipswich, Millwall, and Southampton on the final day, but all they can do is beat Wrexham and see what happens from there.

"We'll look ahead to the last game, and we will see what happens," Morris added.

If it is the play-offs that Middlesbrough have to settle for, then there'll be some internal disappointment, but if Kim Hellberg's side play as they did against Watford, not many fellow top-six sides will be able to hang with them.

That's the belief of many outside the Boro camp, but it also reflects how the players feel themselves, with Morris going on to state, "It's tough to keep up with us for 90 minutes.

"You can do it for 20 or 30 minutes and try to mark our style of play and keep up that pace, but you can't do it for long. We stayed patient to our principles, and it worked out.

"It was a weird time [during the winless run] because I don't think we were ever playing badly. It's just here, a couple of weird bounces happened, and they fell our way. It wasn't going like that for a few months. I've never experienced football like that.

"I'm glad to see those bounces are going our way now, and it's working out. We'll do it next game, and see what happens."

The American has been a key cog in the Kim Hellberg wheel at the Riverside, and if he and his teammates can get back on the right side of some results and play without pressure, Boro may still be in with a shout of achieving promotion at the end of the season.

Middlesbrough didn't necessarily have more shots or create more chances against Watford as they did in previous games; they just ended up taking those chances at a higher rate against Ed Still's side.

If this is a sign of things to come, there may be no stopping Boro en route to a play-off final victory. If they don't manage to squeeze into the top two next weekend, that is.
