Middlesbrough supporters knew replacing Hayden Hackney and finding Aidan Morris a strong replacement would never be straightforward, but the club appear to have moved quickly and intelligently in the transfer market.

There is a compelling argument that Hayden Hackney and Aidan Morris formed the Championship's finest midfield partnership during the 2025/26 campaign. Under Kim Hellberg, the duo struck an excellent balance between defensive discipline and progressive play, providing the platform for Middlesbrough's promotion challenge.

Hackney's composure in possession, range of passing and ability to dictate the tempo complemented Morris' relentless energy, ball-winning qualities and willingness to cover every blade of grass. Together, they gave Boro control in the middle of the park, allowing Hellberg's more attack-minded players to flourish higher up the pitch.

Morris was also progressive and helped to dictate play, though. That underpinned their success and losing a player of Hackney's quality to Everton is naturally a significant blow. Academy graduates with his technical ability are difficult to replace, while his understanding with Morris had become one of the team's biggest strengths.

However, Middlesbrough deserve credit for acting decisively. Rather than dwelling on Hackney's departure, they have identified a replacement who looks capable of slotting seamlessly into Hellberg's system while ensuring the club remain well-placed financially.

With Sebastian Berhalter closing in on a move to Middlesbrough from the Vancouver Whitecaps, they look set to land a player capable of softening the blow of losing one of their standout performers. It is a deal that should excite supporters, but perhaps nobody will be happier than Morris.

For the Boro ace, Berhalter's arrival is about far more than simply welcoming a new teammate. The pair know each other exceptionally well from their formative years at Columbus Crew. Both came through the club's academy before signing Homegrown Player contracts within days of one another in January 2020, marking the beginning of parallel professional careers.

Berhalter is closing in on a deal for the 25-year-old, with Tom Bogert of The Athletic revealing a deal is agreed. He states that the fee is around $2 million (£1.5 million), which has been agreed rather than Berhalter leaving for free in five months when his contract expires.

Remarkably, this will be the latest chapter in Morris and Berhalter's intertwined career path. They even made their senior debuts together. On July 11, 2020, Morris and Berhalter both came off the bench in Columbus Crew's 4-0 victory over FC Cincinnati during the MLS is Back Tournament, sharing a milestone that few teammates ever experience.

That existing relationship should make the transition considerably easier. Instead of needing months to build chemistry, Morris and Berhalter already understand each other's personalities, strengths, and tendencies on the pitch. That familiarity could prove to be invaluable as Middlesbrough look to hit the ground running.

Not only that, but he would be the only other American in the squad, with Morris finally having a compatriot. The duo were born just six months apart, too. From a footballing perspective, Berhalter also appears a sensible replacement for Hackney.

While they are different players in some ways stylistically, Berhalter possesses the technical quality and passing range required to operate at the base of midfield in Hellberg's possession-focused approach. He also has the engine and intensity, much like Morris, to be an upgrade from Hackney off the ball.

Middlesbrough are securing him for a bargain fee because his Vancouver Whitecaps contract is approaching its expiry. In today's market, replacing a player of Hackney's calibre without spending a substantial portion of the transfer income represents outstanding business.

With the Toffees paying an initial fee of £16.5 million, plus a further £8 million in add-ons, Hackney's sale is allowing Boro to compete with clubs with parachute payments. On top of that, the Morgan Rogers sell-on has benefited Middlesbrough after his transfer to Chelsea.

Thus, regarding Berhalter, rather than viewing this as simply replacing one midfielder with another, Boro may have strengthened their overall squad-building strategy. That could ultimately be the biggest positive to emerge from this deal beyond just Morris and Berhalter being an exciting-looking pairing on paper.

Middlesbrough have avoided spending anywhere close to the full amount on Hackney's successor. That leaves the club with considerable financial flexibility during what remains of the summer window. With promotion expectations remaining high, there are still areas that could benefit from reinforcement.

Plenty of the fee went towards acquiring Will Lankshear permanently, but there are upgrades to be had in terms of creativity, defensive competition, and in goal, while more depth is also welcome. All of that would all enhance Hellberg's options across yet another demanding Championship season.

If Berhalter settles as quickly as many expect, the move could prove to be one of the Championship's smartest pieces of recruitment this summer. Morris gets to reunite with a trusted former teammate, Middlesbrough replace one of their key players without breaking the bank, and the club retain plenty of resources to continue strengthening elsewhere.
