Sheffield Wednesday are eyeing up an emergency loan for Joe Lumley

Sheffield Wednesday are in the thick of drama once again, this time in their goalkeeping department.

The Owls slipped down to the foot of the Championship for the first time this season after suffering a 2-1 defeat against Charlton Athletic in their last outing.

Henrik Pedersen’s side have had to deal with an overwhelming number of issues behind the scenes, such as players not receiving payment on time for five of the last seven months.

This saw key operators such as Josh Windass and Michael Smith leave Hillsborough for free and Wednesday hit with five embargoes as a result.

Restricted from paying transfer fees, the Owls were extremely limited in the business they could commence during the summer window. In fact, loan deals for Ethan Horvath and Harry Amass were all the Steel City side could manage.

Horvath has started eight of Wednesday’s opening 10 Championship matches, keeping a clean sheet away at Portsmouth as well as making two penalty saves against Leeds United in an EFL Cup shootout victory.

The ‘keeper on loan from Cardiff City was sent off in the final stages of the Owls’ defeat against Charlton Athletic, after taking Isaac Olaofe when running through on goal.

Horvath’s subsequent suspension has forced Wednesday into exploring the emergency loan market, due to having just one available goalkeeper in their squad.

According to Dom Howson via X, the Steel City side are in talks with Bristol City to secure Joe Lumley’s services whilst Horvath is suspended, with the EFL set to approve the transfer.

Amid this news, Football League World has taken a look at how much the shot-stopper currently earns at Ashton Gate.

As per Capology, Lumley is estimated to be taking home £7,500 per week. This puts him on the lower end of the Robins’ earners, with 11 players believed to be earning less and 17 thought to be rewarded with more.

However, that isn’t close to the £15,000 Horvath is estimated to be receiving each week, according to Capology.

Joe Lumley’s impact at Sheffield Wednesday could be short but sweet

If Lumley is signed as Wednesday’s emergency replacement, then it is likely that he will be in net to face Middlesbrough.

It has been confirmed that Horvath’s suspension will only be for one match, which means that Lumley is probably going to get just a single outing for the Owls.

Boro have been one of the division’s best sides so far this season and Wednesday face an uphill task to try and get anything from their clash with Rob Edwards’ side.

However, if Lumley can perform some heroics and get the Steel City side an unlikely result, his brief cameo as a Wednesday goalkeeper will live long in the memory of the Hillsborough faithful.

It’s unlikely that Middlesbrough will be worried about the ‘keeper’s performance though, after seeing Lumley up close during the 2022/23 campaign.

His struggles at the Riverside led to him earning quite a poor reputation with Boro supporters, which means they aren’t likely to lose much sleep over the prospect of playing Lumley.
